What is a Car Title?

A title is a physical document that proves ownership of a vehicle. When a car is purchased for the first time, a dealership provides the title to the new owner and registers it with the state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). This process establishes the owner’s legal claim to the vehicle and allows the state to track its history. This includes any changes in ownership, accidents, title brands, or liens.

NOTE: The title is the most important legal document involved in the purchase or sale of any vehicle.

How Titles Keep Consumers Safe

Titles can become “branded” when a car is involved in a significant event. For instance, a title might receive a “salvage” brand when involved in a serious accident or a “rebuilt” brand when repaired. This is one way that titles keep consumers safe– by ensuring vehicle histories are recorded, accurate, and easy for buyers to see.
